The Big Sea: A Treasure

This book had a profound effect my life as a writer.My mother read it to me at night like fairy tales when I was very young. As I grew up and realized I wanted to write professionally, the lessons in The Big Sea made the writing life seem not only possible, but the best life a person could find. I would say without a doubt that this is my favorite book of all time. If I was marooned on a desert island, this would be the book I would take with me. From his base in Harlem, it shows Hughes embracing the whole world. The Big Sea is a book to read and treasure. again and again.

A compelling journey of understanding oneself and the world.

Langston Hughes' book, "The Big Sea," is a chronicle of the legendary writer's life up until his first success as a writer. His journey's take him to Mexico, Africa, and Europe in a quest to find out his place in this world. In a time when being a person of color meant certain injustice, Hughes uses his travels to become aware of the "ways" of racism and how to combat it. An excellent book that is more an exciting adventure, than an autobiography.

An intriguing look at Langston Hughes and Harlem

Hughes, known primarily for his poetry and short stories, discusses his life.

I found it intriguing that such a wonderful writer struggled so. Much like Maya Angelou's books, this book left me with the feeling that truly great people can overcome tremendous obstacles to succeed. Also like Maya's books, this book made me realize that many of my own troubles pale to those of some very successful people.

Perhaps what I enjoyed most about this book was Hughes' reflection on Harlem, 1920s-1930s. His interaction with such greats as Van Vechten, Hurston, Thurman, and others was fascinating, leaving me wanting to know even more about 1920-30s life in Harlem.

A great book, written by one of the greats

A great book, written by one of the greats. I bought it thinking it was what I used in high school. But I realized when I got it that we must have used the Houghton-Mifflin book rather than Addison-Wesley. HM had much better graphics than AW, and I miss not being able to relive that, but this book is so well written it is fine.

If your idea of teaching geometry is proof, proof, proof (like R.H. Moore's method), Then this is The boom for you. I still have the sample material used to test the New Math out, and there was really not tons of changes from the pre-pub edition to the 1982 edition I have.

The main tools utilised are a posteriori error estimators and indicators which are able to give global and local information on the error of the numerical solution, using only the computed numerical solution and known data of the problem. Presenting the most frequently used error estimators which have been developed by various scientists in the last two decades, this book demonstrates that they are all based on the same basic principles. These principles are then used to develop an abstract framework which is able to handle general nonlinear problems. The abstract results are applied to various classes of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations from, for example, fluid and continuum mechanics, to yield reliable and easily computable error estimators. The book covers stationary problems but omits transient problems, where theory is often still too complex and not yet well developed.

'The Oxford Guide to the History of Physics and Astronomy', edited by John Heilbron, is a wonderful reference resource, but also an interesting book to read. It is organised as an encyclopedic dictionary, with over 200 entries that range in size from half a page to several pages in length. This covers history from the a little past the Renaissance to the present (with occasional references to earlier discoveries and events), including entries in other sciences such as geography and oceanography and how they relate to the issues in physics and astronomy.

Entries include topics, biographies, short essays, inventions and concepts. The biographical entries are generally paired - figures such as Einstein and Newton warrant their own entries (as does Benjamin Franklin for some inexplicable reason), but sometimes the pairings don't quite seem to fit (Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawking, for example, are both popularisers of physics and astronomy, but perhaps deserve somewhat better pairings). For the concept of the pairings, inspiration seems drawn from Plutarch, whose magnum opus 'Lives' paired biographies of notable figures.

The overall organisation is alphabetical, but there is also a complex hierarchy of entries as well that includes primary articles for comprehensive disciplines, principle subdivisions within the disciplines, and third level entries on specific items within the subdivisions (including biographies). There are extensive cross-references as well, in addition to supplemental reading lists.

In some ways, this book is a subset of the greater work, 'The Oxford Companion to the History of Modern Science' - there is a complete listing of entries for that work included in this text, to show how this area of science fits within the greater whole (for one thing).

One thing I found about this book, however, is that it is a compelling read. When I first received the book, I stopped to look up a few items, and found myself still reading through articles and following the cross-references more than an hour later. Despite being a reference book, it is an accessible and inviting text to for the reader, which is the mark of a good history text. For anyone interested in physics, astronomy, or the history of science, this is a text to be prized.

The Kindle Edition is terrible. There is no real Table of Contents, making it very hard to browse for the content you wish. Also, the Index shows page numbers that do not match the Kindle Edition. Not worth the price.

About the Author
Anila Chandra is a home maker and a great cook. She learned her cooking skills from the very best teacher – her mother, a strict vegetarian to whom the Ashram style cooking came naturally. She has taught Indian cooking at a community college in Anchorage, Alaska. Niraj Chandra is a professional engineer working and living in Canada. He has been practicing yoga for a long time and he has taught yoga at the Alaska Pacific University. He revels in his wife’s cooking. He loves good food and drink, and over the years, his taste has migrated towards Ashram style cooking. He has personally tried out all the recipes in the book, to make sure that even an engineer can follow the instructions. Both husband and wife have visited many ashrams in India and in North America and these visits have been the inspiration behind this book.

While there are many books on Indian cooking with various recipes, I found “The Ashram Diet” by Anila and Niraj Chandra to be totally different. It talks about the spiritual aspects of vegetarian food from the perspective of yogis. It is essential reading for anyone who practices yoga in any shape or form.

As I was reading this book, I focussed on just one recipe from the book – Sour Cereal- and it blew me away. It takes less than 20 minutes to prepare the dish, using the step by step instructions provided in the book. The results were excellent and the Sour Cereal is now one of my favourite breakfast dishes. I simply cannot wait to try out all the other recipes in this amazing book.

I look forward to more books/recipes of this kind from these authors. Good luck in all your new ventures.

This is a fantastic book with so much great information! Much needed as life becomes more fast paced and our diet becomes an afterthought. This book puts the different kinds of diets into perspective and matches them to our personality. It effectively shows us how to select our foods and how our food effects our behavior.

The book is easy to follow and it has a great set of recipes that are not found anywhere and are the secret recipes of Ashrams in India. The recipes are yummy and healthy, I have tried a few so far already! The recipes are very authentic and different from the typical food found in Indian restaurants, must try recipes!
