Churchill's "Case"

He said of this work, "This is not history, this is my case." That is, it's his viewpoint on events, and to some degree, his justification for the actions he took during the war. He was too modest. This is also great history from the pen of a man who was not only a great statesman and war leader, but a gifted writer. To read it is a pleasure--and a bit sad since it underlines the decline in letters since Churchill's generation. Only his speeches are more inspiring. For the few remaining purists among us, I would recommend the full six-volume set, but much is captured in this condensed version. Get it and learn not only history, but the proper use of English.

TOO MUCH DETAIL OMITTED

I was disappointed with this abridged history since I had already read the six volume set and loved it for all its rich detail and atmosphere.
This one-volume abridged edition left me a little flat. So much had been taken out to make it concise and easy to read that it lost a lot of voice and it especially is lacking the Churchill flavor of action and detail that makes the six volume set exciting and monumental.

A Unique Perspective of WWII

Oftentimes in recorded history a leader emerges as literally the "right man at the right time", a godsend for a country desperately in need of leadership after being led to the brink of disaster. Churchill was such a leader, and Britain desperately needed him in 1939 as Hitler's armies blitzed into Poland while Chamberlain stood by powerless to stop him.
This abridged memoir of the conflict by Churchill, one of the most dynamic personalities of the last century, is a fascinating profile of leadership, offering a unique glimpse into the problems faced by the Allies as the war destroyed the shaky peace of Versailles.
Here is Churchill in all his bravado, bemoaning Britain's woefull lack of preparation, and discussing in shocking detail the problems faced by the Allies as Britain joined the conflict and tried without success to keep the Nazis out of France. You are there as Churchill finds out, to his amazement, that the French have no reserves after the Maginot Line is pierced and the Germans head, unopposed, toward Paris. You understand the tremendous burden faced by Britain as Churchill explains the efficiency of the german war machine, churning out tanks and u-boats on a daily basis at the outbreak of the war while pacifist Britain's military industry had literally ground to a halt.
This is not a battle by battle narrative of every major conflict, and the Pacific theater is in particular given short attention as Britain played a relatively minor role there. Readers interested in the specifics of troop movements, maps, etc. should look elsewhere. However Churchill provides fascinating glimpses into the leaders of the Allied powers, recounting Stalin's relentless demand that Britain and the U.S. open a second front to divert attention away from Hitler's armies. And every American's heart will swell as Churchill expresses the pride and confidence he felt as the Americans entered the war: "Hitler's fate was sealed. Mussolini's fate was sealed. As for the Japanese, they would be ground to powder. All the rest was merely the proper application of overwhelming force." Churchill's words here, and the exerpts of his speeches to Parliament, are as stirring now as they were 58 years ago when he pumped courage into the British as they endured countless bombing raids.
The book has its lapses. It seems like Churchill at times seems a little too interested in presenting his arguments for or against certain operations, (and of course as the author he is usually right), and the abridgement here seems to devote more attention to relatively minor battles like Tobruk than to the Normandy invasion and the liberation of France. However any history buff will want to consider this book required reading for a fuller understanding of WWII.

I adore these books!

I think that the whole set of Beginner Books is wonderful. There is the green book, purple, blue, red. I am very fond of all of them and they give a variety of stories to enjoy. When I read my kids books, it is nice to keep the same book out for a few nights of reading. When they are older, I can use this to teach them to read without having to resort to something boring like the Dick and Jane books. I plan on collecting them all in the end.

a non cookie cutter YA bok that is great!

Confessions of a Queen B* is the first book in the young adult Queen B* series by Crista McHugh. I loved this book so much!I found it to be a breath of fresh air. The mean girl cliche has seemed overdone and tired to me lately, but Crista McHugh breathes new life and heart into this story of self professed Queen B* blogger, Alexis. Her blog is like a mixture of gossip girl and Harriet the Spy. And what I loved was that each chapter started off with a mini excerpt from her blog, the Eastline Spy. (Eastline is the high school name by the way.)

While the blog and Alexis’ status as Queen B* of the high school is a central theme of the story, it almost felt secondary to the wonderful friendship that was forming between Lexie (as he calls her) and Brent. Brent is uber popular, and is paired up with Lexie for a very high tech baby project. Together they are responsible for raising a baby. (which I am beyond happy they did not have when I was in high school, because that would have been a nightmare for me.) Brent is so great. I loved how grounded and stable he is. He is just an all around great guy.And he actually took the time to tell Lexie that he wasn’t buying her mean girl act, listen to her and actually get to know her. It melted my heart.

And Confessions of a Queen B*, while being a really sweet budding relationship between the two of them with flirting and cutesy banter, it was so innocent and developed at what I thought was a wonderful and appropriate pace. There is a hint of more to come but I kind of love Crista McHugh for setting up the series the way she did. She didn’t rush into romance just for the sake of having romance. When I finished the book I flipped out and immediately checked goodreads to make sure that this was part of a series. But never fear, dear readers, it is. There will be more in store for Lexie and Brent. Crista I hope you have something great in store for them in the next book, because I really really like them together. They are probably in my top 5/10 book couples of 2015.

Fans of Young Adult high school setting books that are craving something fresh and so, so well done. Check out Confessions of a Queen B*. It is a great YA book, that is not cookie cutter, and will have you smiling ear to ear. I think you will love it just as much as I did.

I do love myself some good old high school hierarchy drama. I really don't think life gets any more exciting. It's like being at war, and perhaps that's why - being a huge fantasy nerd - reading the HS misery of someone else is oddly and sadistically gratifying. And for good reason. Brett is pretty much perfect, and, as it turns out, a lot more like her than Lexi is comfortable with. It's like realizing that all the beliefs that you've held close to your heart for so long, lived your life by, may not actually be true. WOW AWESOME BOOK!

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It centers around high school students but didn’t feel too high school. It was a really great read that everyone could connect with Lexi was a character you can connect with. I have a theory that everyone in their life has felt bullied. I don’t care how perfect your life is, you feel not good enough at some point. Lexi was that girl who had a best friend who hurt her. She fought back. She became the Queen B and in turn put up walls all around her.

Bret was the wrecking ball that came in and started to tear those down. How could you not love this guy? He was incredible! I LOVED Bret, and I truly cannot wait to see what happens. I will put this on my must read list, and suggest you ONE CLICK NOW!!!

My beloved book on GFD

Pedlosky's GFD book is a true classic. Its treatment of the core issues is precise and there is an excellent balance between the mathematical derivations and the discussions on the physical processes. One needs to have some background in classical fluid dynamics and applied mathematics (especially integral transformations, Fourier analysis, complex variables and PDE's) to truely appreciate the book but it can be potentially helpful to anyone who is interested in rotating stratified fluids and is eager to learn.

A Good Book Ruined

This review has to do with the Kindle Edition of this book only! The other editions are probably fine.

A text such as this is full of equations. This is good, because the object in reading the text is generally to learn how to calculate certain quantities. However, if you are learning the subject still, the equations must be readable.

I purchased the Kindle version of this book, because it could be delivered immediately. However, upon receipt, I find that many of the equations are not readable.

Equation 3.3.1 has three partial derivatives in it. None of the division bars are visible! The curly d's that are used to indicate partial-differentiation are missing parts of their loops, making them look a bit like backwards 5s. This I could live with, but it gets worse.

Equation 3.6.7 has pieces that are moved with respect to where they should be, making it very hard to read.

Equation 3.9.8b has an integral sign that has been misplaced into a position such that it looks like it is part of an exponent, which it is not.

Equation 3.9.16, the third equation has the division bars moved above the equation.

Equation 3.9.21 has variables that cannot be distinguished.

There are more, but that should suffice. I have focused on Chapter 3, because it contains the information for which I purchased the book in the first place. Scanning through the rest, it appears to be more of the same.

This ebook appears to have been constructed by scanning the printed text and adding a few links. However, the scan was of very poor quality. Even the body of the text exhibits missing pieces of letters. The purpose of this kind of book is to teach, but that purpose has been overthrown by the slipshod manner in which it was executed. If I were the author of the text, I would be ashamed and furious to have this version of my work where anyone could see it.

I believe that I am going to demand a refund, which I might then apply to a paper copy of this book, as the book itself looks excellent.

Intuition First

All the math in the world would be useless in any applied subject without physical intuition about the phenomena and a clear passage between the intuition and the math. Pedlosky's book has it all - intuition and math. I have loved studying it as my first step in the direction of geophysics from a career in pure mathematics. The book is clear, easy to read, interesting, fascinating. Thank you Pedlosky for a magnificent textbook.

Edgard Varese was one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century, but somehow no English-language biography of this titan was ever published, until now. I have been awaiting this publishing event for more than 25 years. That this book fills such a major void accounts for most of the 3 stars I gave it. Alan Clawson is generally known as a rock historian, and his style is probably better suited to that. He gives us the details of Varese's life as well as some glimpses of the private man, and does a decent enough job of it. There is also adequate description of Varese's too-infrequent published compositions. But he refers to himself much too often for the biography of a man he never met - and mostly of the "Yeah, I remember listening to the Beatles on my car radio" variety, transferred onto the avant-garde composer. And such flippant words and phrases as "kinda", "feller", and "Oh, Gawd" serve as a jarring distraction from the subject and call still more unneeded attention to the author. There is also a chapter and a half devoted to Frank Zappa, an admirer of Varese. Nothing wrong with that per se, I guess, but I fail to see how Zappa's arrest on a morals charge falls within the scope of this book. There is virtually nothing on how Varese's influence can be heard in Zappa's music. If you like Varese and have wanted to learn more about him, go ahead and get the book. But if you've waited a quarter-century as I have, you may not find it entirely worth the wait.

I'm Still Waiting for a Varese Biography!!!

The English-speaking music world has been waiting for a comprehensive biography of musical maverick Edgard Varese for nearly a century. Varese is probably the only important contemporary composer who has never been the recipient of scholarly attention. So imagine my delight when I picked up this book on a recent trip to St. Louis. Finally, the English biography of the elusive composer that I'd been waiting for! Unfortunately, after reading the book, I'm still waiting for a good book on the composer.
This book, written by rock biographer Alan Clayson, is the single worst musical biography I've ever read. Clayson is better known for his tomes on the Beatles, including the popular Backbeat, which told the story of the Beatles' early years in Germany. Unfortunately, he brings the same gossipy qualities and rock-magazine journalist prose to this enterprise and the results are really poor. The facts of Varese's life are basically not very exciting. Like most composers, Varese's profession was solitary and, in his case, marked by extended periods of inaction. Clayson is reduced to creating imaginative scenes and undocumented reactions in an effort to "spice" up the biographical skeleton. He also injects his own opinions into the narrative liberally, ascribing to Varese contempt for more popular composers like Copland that is not bourn out by the facts. And he reserves a chapter and a half for Frank Zappa, a figure that, though he was indeed a great proponent of the composer, never met the man.
All of this would be merely annoying but could be justified if Clayson had anything of interest to say about Varese's compositions. After all, the most interesting thing about a composer is always the music. But Clayson is mind-numbingly braindead when it comes to speaking about music. There is no analysis of the works in question. Rather, Clayson is given to speaking in purple prose about his dubious impressions of the compositions. Ameriques in particular is subjected to ridiculous treatment, as Clayson blathers on about "the otherworldly deliberation of a dream's slow motion in its paranormal and fragmented mindscapes of frontier forts and wide white spaces on a map of emptiness." Often, Clayson seems proud of his musical ignorance, as he ridicules theorists subjecting works like Density 21.5 to analysis, as if the desire to study a seminal modern score is somehow base.
The shame of it is that Varese is a composer that is endlessly fascinating, even given his very small surviving output. No follower of the "isms" of the 20th century, Varese made his own way, and indeed proved prophetic. He was an early and enthusiastic pioneer in electronic music and predicted the day when performers would be replaced by machines capable of directly communicating a composer's thought to an audience, something that, for better or worse, is increasingly common in these days of MIDI. And his attitude toward music as organized sound has had wide-ranging influence in the world of 20th century composition and even experimental rock. All of this is makes the composer a fruitful subject for a comprehensive biography. Someday, someone with ability will attempt the biography I've been waiting for. Until that day, Clayson's book is all we've got. My suggestion is to be patient and don't waste your money on this drivel.

Varese deserves better

Varese urgently deserves a decent and independent biography and an approachable analysis of his musical works.
Clayson is not up to either task. This book is poorly written, full of historical inaccuracies and/or misunderstandings, and devoid of any substantial musical analysis.
I truly regret having spent money on this.

One seriously hot erotica!

This is a fantastic, almost Shakespearean erotica full of betrayal, drama, and incredibly hot sex! After Amy experiences anal for the first time with her husband Greg, the sexual urge for more begins to consume her life, leading to her fulfilling her need anyway she can, including a feverishly hot scene at an underground sex club. When Greg's brother, James, and his fiancé Lucy stay over for a couple of days while they plan their wedding, secrets and sexual passions are brought to the surface. The sex was well written, intense, fast-paced, and completely satisfying ;) I really liked this erotica. It had more meat to the story than typical stories, so five stars!

This was not a book I could listen to freely around the house, but I did take pleasure in listening to It. It was really hot story-telling, Weather ur into anal or not. This book was interesting and steamy. I must say it was well written and narrated. Once I read the intro,horny house wife visitors and anal. I was sold. Hallelujah

Okay, so this book is a god send (the puns are endless). I actually checked it out at the library, but then, upon reading it, I realized that I had so many pages I wanted to write in with notes and things that I just had to buy it. I've had training in acting and have been involved in several shows, but the techniques and tips in this book have helped me really unlock some things that were escaping me. But the quotes sprinkled throughout the book? Most of them I had to write down somewhere and stick them on my mirror or something, because those quotes described my life in a way I didn't think words could.
Basically, anyone that has a real love of theatre and acting-- ESPECIALLY if that is what you want to do the rest of your life-- get this book. Read it. Absorb it. Then keep it in your nightstand like I do.

Wait finally over.

Finally, I had to wait for over a year for this book to be written, well worth the wait. I love all the characters in this series. The action and twist are always keeping you on your toes. I hope the next one doesn't take this long.

I loved Sleeping with the Enemy. A lot of twist and turns is this book. Nothing is answered, and everything learned created more questions. So can't wait to see what happens next. Slay, Virani and Tao and a whole new element of crazy to things.
