Great Illustrations, Poor Authorship

As an earlier review notes, this book is for children only. Children in the fourth or fifth grade, and especially sensitive children whom you do not wish to shock with notions of blood and violence. This book is more a history of the author's vacations with his family than of a war. And to be blunt, what makes this arrogant writer imagine that I have the tiniest interest in his son picking out a toy from some battlefield gift shop? Another ten year old might be interested in knowing that toys are available there, I will concede that. To an adult though this book is plainly annoying if not insulting. Gen. Joe Johnson's resistance to Gen. Sherman, which was one of the most intense and perhaps the most military campaigns of the whole war, is described as "dallying" before and "winking" at the enemy. That is what war represents? No deaths, no shattered bodies, just people "winking" at the enemy? Shameful.
The second star in the rating was earned by the illustrative content, which is excellent. Many books often use line drawing copies of famous works of art because they are cheaper to reproduce, however this one uses the originals. As the book is fairly common and copies may be had cheap, I would not say don't get one. Just don't bother reading it.

Excellent book for young people .

This well produced book was prepared for National Geographic . It is printed on the same glossy paper that lasts forever as the National Geographic magazine . I have it in hardback form ( I recommend it ) it has stitched binding . It's greatest feature is the wonderful color pictures , hundreds of them , some are contemporary to publishing date of battle fields , war sites and towns . Many are of great paintings done of Battles , People and events that depict the mid-1800s world . I highly recommend this book for students and adults . Any one who have read a National Geographic knows how well they can show a world gone by . This book is a winner for a student or would be student of American history . This book is partly written as a travel adventure of the author and his family , wife and two young children , visitation of many of the cities and battlefields . This manner of writing give it a quaint feeling . Buy it for yourself , buy for your kids .

IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT ITS COPYRIGHT WAS IN 1969...AND ITS 6th PRINTING WAS IN 1983..........ITS STILL AN EXCELLENT READ FROM THE AUTHORS' PERSPECTIVE AND HIS CHILDREN...
I'VE READ MANY BOOKS ABOUT 'THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES' AND IN THIS BOOK I LEARNED QUITE A FEW THINGS I DIDNT KNOW BEFORE.........
