“I have no expectations for the future. I am not afraid of death … I am a woman who has come back from hell” … then he slapped me. He barked something in Arabic and they all immediately surrounded me. They dragged me to the corridor again. The ropes tightened around my wrists. They tied them around my ankles and hung me with my head down. “Well, now you’re going to tell us everything,” my tormentor growled. He pulled out a thick cable wrapped in black insulation and thrashed me. The first blow cut through my heels with pain I had never experienced before. This was just the beginning … the longest night of my life had begun. My name is Valya Chervenyashka. Maybe you have heard about me. I am a nurse by trade. Now I’m 54 years old. Eight of them I spent behind the bars of several prisons, accused of mass murder. Three times I have been sentenced to death. Coarse voices have cursed me, unknown hands have insulted my body, hundreds of throats have called my name, thousands of hearts have passionately prayed for my death and millions of people from all kinds of countries have seen my face … few people are indifferent to me.

Review
- "This horror story made international headlines. It shows brutality in its most extreme form, a wilful act of cruel injustice for which the Libyan government stands accused. Reading this book will make you cry." - Dries Brunt, "Citizen Newspaper", South Africa
- "One of the most emotional and revealing confessions..." - "Telegraph Newspaper", Bulgaria
- "It is impossible to walk away from Notes From Hell without a combination of feelings; the first of elation that she and her fellow accused survived, the second that the horror occurred in the first place. Nikolay Yordanov and Valya Chervenyashka put you there; something that stirs up a great deal of dread. Even the small victories that she and the others experienced do not allow you to relax because you are already anticipating the next deception. A horrific story well told, Notes From Hell will stir every emotion you have within you. You won't walk away and forget this book for a very long time, if ever." - Bil Howard, "Readers' Favorite"
- "This intimate account is relayed with raw honesty and emotion. A cold, sobering look at some of life's injustices." - Michelle Bristow-Bovey, "Cape Times", South Africa
From the Author
Creating this book with Valya was an interesting process. Our first meeting took place in a cafeteria in Sofia. The conversation flowed smoothly and it didn't feel like an interview. To Valya's great indignation, I didn't prepare a list of questions and merely let the conversation take its natural course. We jumped from one topic to another and from one point in time to another. I didn't want the book to necessarily follow the chronology.
Our next meetings were at her daughters house. Valya was more relaxed in this setting and revealed horrific details of what had happened in prison.
When we started working together I left two things at home: my pity and my good manners. I made her talk even when she was overcome by emotion. I kept asking for details about the smallest things so that I could visualize what she had been through.
I like Valya. She is an extremely strong, stable and honest person. She had been through hell and I merely helped put her thoughts on paper. I hope that publishing this book will finally put a full stop to her long and painful saga.

A stunning book about the HIV Trial in Libya. A survival story of Good v Evil
By Cam
I'm half way through the book. It's a very good book, based on the horrifying truth of the Libyan HIV Trials.
Mesmerizing, horrific, sad, an absolute tragedy.
The absolute horror that was inflicted on Mrs. Chervenyashka and her collegues is a stunning, disgusting tragedy perpetrated by pure EVIL. The men (and one woman!) that held and tortured these poor innocent caregivers, disgraced themselves, Libya, and all of humanity.
Mrs. Chervenyashka is an amazing woman with an enduring strength I've never witnessed in real life.
God Bless her, the other scapegoats, and the almost 300 children that were needlessly
and carelessly infected with HIV.

Great book!I couldn't put down until finished it!Very deep, emotional, heartfelt story of a strong women thrown in jail for something she has never done, but yet she has been prosecuted, tortured, went true traumatic years of undeserved punishment far from her home country.I did grow up in Bulgaria and for me the story feels so close to my heart even if I have not known any of the imprisoned victims,I was touched by their life story,by their strong faith,by their love for life and their hope for humanity after all they have been true...Very raw, real, touching story and a must read!
