Dear potential reader: Agility is the new key to success.

When trying to revitalize Office Depot, I was looking for ways to increase the overall business agility. As moving a giant isn’t easy, I ordered over 10 books on agility, ranging from ICT to Logistics and Business. Big organisations face challenges in renewing themselves. Although it is not an easy endeavour to revitalize a giant, the principles as presented by Mr. Michael Hugos, clearly explain how to differentiate between Lean and Leap aspects in the organisation.

Perhaps even more important than the concept of Business Agility itself, is the practical way in which Mr. Hugos transforms vision into action. The book is suited for both conceptual and non-conceptual readers, offering practical advice to increase the overall Business Agility. Regardless if you are aiming to increase the R&D impact of your organisation, or if you are trying to optimize the overall efficiency, the book offers a guide to separate Lean from Leap and to harmonize energy in creating an integrated approach. Since the book connects well to all types of people, it introduces a common language that allows any board to discuss overall Business Agility, regardless of the background or orientation of individual board members. It connects beyond a board's or team's diversity.

Although one could argue if I succeeded in renewing Office Depot’s overall agility, I have applied the principles multiple times at both corporate organisations as SME companies. These companies include Philips, Unilever and HAL Investments. The principles that Mr. Hugos explains are universal and practical. This is a must for anybody that realizes that organisations have a life cycle. In current environment it’s important to maintain operational efficiency whilst simultaneously organizing market driven innovations that have a relevant impact at corporate level. This is where Business Agility makes the difference and adds on to existing literature. I have applied the concept of Mr. Hugos in both big and small companies, ranging from 20 FTE to 90.000 FTE.

Business Agility is a must for any modern self-conscious business leader or any person that wants to contribute to the overall organisational agility. This book is the missing link between a lot of the existing literature and allows you to accelerate your company in multiple ways. It connects well across functional disciplines and allows you to create an overall agility agenda for your company. Business Agility a must in the Information Economy

This is the third book I've read by Mr. Hugos and he never disappoints! Writing in an entertaining style that is easy to understand, informative without being pedantic Mr. Hugos skillfully delivers on making business perform and more profitable in the information economy. I have run a business for a quarter century in an industry where the operative buzz word has always been urgency but after reading Business Agility Sustainable Prosperity in a Relentlessly Competitive world my philosophy of conducting business and my understanding of how businesses should operate have been fundamentally changed.

By introducing and /or elaborating on three concepts OODA, Six Sigma, and Mr. Hugos' own DDB Define Design Build, and melding them all together in a cohesive plan to attain business agility he has delivered a powerful new book to the bible on how to properly conduct business, and how to stretch the almighty profit margin!

The concepts of business agility are cleverly conveyed by his use of drawing analogies from how a sun flower functions to the military tactics of great military minds of the past. While this book was probably written with the idea of making a large enterprise more nimble (it takes a while to turn an ocean liner) I see where the ideas and concepts presented will be useful in my small business (canoes have to be navigated too!)

In this book Mr. Hugos has shown how the old hierarchical controlling ways of doing business should be, must be replaced with a coordinated network approach. An approach that enables innovation, and promotes visibility, training and creates motivation. In this book Mr. Hugos has created a blue print to transform any organization from a staid assembly line, monolithic dinosaur to a dynamic, responsive and adaptive modern firm capable of growing the bottom line.

A Must Read!

Michael Hugos is one of my new Intellectual heroes. His works blend theory with reality in a fascinating way, he's like a Thucydides in business: His ideas don't come merely from study, he's actually been practicing them in the real world! I'm a business student, so perhaps I just don't have the experience to completely apply the theories in from most business writers, but reading Michael Hugos work just makes the theories click inside my head from his real world examples and super description. Example: I might read about Porters 5 Strategy Test and drill in my head "I must apply Fit across my value chain" but don't really know what that actually means. Hugos gives real life examples and step by step descriptions on how to apply this on businesses, and NOW the theories I've previously read begin to make sense and I can apply the ideas on a broader concept.

Another example is Porters claim that you must reduce costs from business activities or increase the price of your products and services with tailored value propositions. This is too abstract, its difficult to apply this concept into a real world setting, but Hugos gives the most brilliant and clear description of how to achieve this through Information Technology and achieve Alpha Profits.

Overall this is one of the most influential business books I've read and has completely altered the way I understand business and the career path I had planned. It shows how IT interconnects with every aspect of the company from Operational Effectiveness, Value Proposition, Corporate Strategy, Human Resource Management, etc. Its the kind of book I can't wait to reread several times and completely internalize its ideas on my head.

From a body of believers to a body of beliefs

Split into two parts, Christianity in the West addresses two themes: the state of "traditional" Christianity, or Catholicism as practiced by the majority of Western European Christians prior to the sixteenth century, and the changes wrought upon this community by the Reformation. In a book of one hundred and seventy-one pages, Dr. John Bossy uses only seventeen endnotes. This is an important observation, because it emphasizes the familiarity and virtuosity that Bossy displays with his subject. Although the author provides a short preface, the book lacks chapters dedicated to either an introduction or a conclusion. Bossy tells us up front that his book addresses this question: "Supposing that your account of what you call traditional Christianity is roughly correct, what difference does it make to the conventional narrative of sixteenth-century reformations, Protestant or Catholic?" Roughly, Bossy is trying to provide a new perspective on what the medieval society of Christians had before the reforms of the sixteenth century, and what was lost afterwards. And there can be no mistake that Bossy definitely thinks more was lost than gained.

Part One: Traditional Christianity examines the beliefs and rites of the medieval Church. Bossy's main theme is that traditional Christianity was not a system of religion thrust from the top down, from theologians onto the peasantry, but rather a rich social construct, equally participated in and constructed by all members of society - peasant, burgher, friar, bishop. The author illustrates this by the use of many examples of traditional belief. Bossy discusses the importance of family to the medieval society, and how this was reflected in a fascination with the extended family of Christ - his mother's relations, his step-cousins, etc. Particular attention is paid to the hierarchy of the seven deadly sins, and the difference between sins of concupiscence (or desire) such as gluttony and lechery, and the sins of aversion, which were pride, anger, and envy. Bossy argues that society's winking tolerance of the sins of desire but the special punishments for the sins of aversion prove that those which would disrupt the community the most were defined as the worst sins. This thesis is strengthened even more when Bossy discusses the formation of the Christian fraternities that proliferated throughout Europe. More than a guild or simple municipal brotherhood, these fraternities banded together for strictly Christian purpose, be it glorification of the Eucharist, transmission of catechism, or public charity in the form of delivering Christian burial to members of the community. In summation, the first eighty-seven pages of the book consist of Bossy describing the many ways in which the diverse body of Western European Christians were united by the collective social belief in the Roman Catholic Church.

In contrast, Part Two: Christianity Translated is an eighty page discussion of what changed in Christianity after the turbulent sixteenth century, whether due to the Protestant or Catholic reformations. Assuming his reader's familiarity with the basics, Bossy dispenses with the narrative of dates and names and instead studies changes in theology, belief, and practice. There is discussion of the elimination of representative religious art by the Protestants, the growing popularity of printed catechisms for all religions, and the difficult knot of beliefs around the Trinity and Christ's godhead versus his manhood. Bossy is keenly interested in the growing rift between public and private practices of faith, in what power was surrendered by the organized church to the individual faithful, and what structures replaced the Church in the minds of the society. Here Bossy sees perhaps not the disintegration of the tight social fabric he saw as the defining characteristic of traditional Christianity, but certainly the compartmentalization and enclosure of that society into smaller, more self-sufficient groups. His closest statement to a summation is that "[b]y 1700 the Christian world was full of religions, objective social and moral entities characterized by system, principles, and hard edges..." Clearly, where Bossy sees an organic body of the faithful in late medieval Christianity, he sees a splintered collection of competing orthodoxies by 1700, and the change was not a happy one.

The book is certainly engaging, if a bit obtuse at times. Bossy is able to gather his audience and pull the reader along through his summaries and arguments, and the journey is enlightening. A writer with such a commanding knowledge of his subject is always a pleasure to read. However, genius may not always be entirely convincing. Bossy's treatment of the forms the new Christianity took is the strongest part of his book. His earlier characterization of medieval Christianity is a little too pat, unfortunately. Bossy himself admits that he is glossing over wide swaths of the Church, particularly its Irish fringe and national Orthodox churches. In striving to see the unity of the body of the faithful in 1400, Bossy turns a blind eye to the many sectarian influences that were already existent, and indeed had always been there. This flaw does not diminish the fine summation of the effects of the reformation in Part Two, but it does undermine his thesis of the unified whole of the medieval Church. And without that, the reader is left rather nonplussed by Bossy's conviction that so much was lost by 1700.

A Book for Brits

The authors approach is that of the Anales school. He is good at that, but a difficult read for Yanks. There are frequent unexplained references which may make sense to someone from the UK, but are lost on this American. Sometimes the references are simply intrinsically opaque in themselves. Explanatory footnotes are sometimes necessary, and this book has few if any of them. This is an area with which I am quite familiar although I am not a professional historian.

Dry and hard to read

I had to read this for my course. The author assumes you know pretty much everything about the Reformation and all its players. Full of lofty vernacular, I had to read the book with Google open so that I could look up what he was writing about... and I have some background knowledge of the Reformation. In addition to anything else, the print is woeful and detracts from any enjoyment to be derived from this turgid slog.

About the Author
Erich Neumann, born in 1905, was a student of C. G. Jung and practiced analytical psychology in Tel Aviv from 1934 to his death in 1960. He is known through his many publications for advancing a philosophical approach to analysis and for formulating a coherent theory of feminine development.

A JUNGIAN PRESENTS THE ARCHETYPE OF THE ‘DIVINE FEMININE’

Erich Neumann (1905-1960), was a Jungian psychologist, philosopher, and author; he also wrote books such as The Origins and History of Consciousness, The Fear of the Feminine, Depth Psychology and a New Ethic, Amor and Psyche, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 379-page plus 185 B&W plates paperback edition.]

He wrote in the Preface to this 1955 book, “In this book we have attempted a structural analysis of an archetype; we have striven to show its inner growth and dynamic, and its manifestation in the myths and symbols of mankind. Such an understanding is one of the central needs of analytical psychology. For, in both a theoretical and a practical sense, it is very hard for those who have not experienced the reality of the archetype by undergoing analysis to understand what depth psychology means by an archetype… Our exposition does not deal with the archetype in general, but with a specific archetype, namely, that of the Feminine or… the Great Mother… The investigation of the special character of the feminine psyche is one of the most necessary and important tasks of depth psychology in its preoccupation with the creative health and development of the individual… The experience of the archetypal world leads to an inner form of humanization that… will perhaps one day prove more reliable than the form of humanism known to us up to now, which is not grounded in depth psychology.”

He notes that the Great Mother “was worshipped and portrayed many thousands of years before the appearance of the term.” (Pg. 11) He points out that “the elementary character of the Archetypal Feminine is far from containing only positive features… the Archetypal Feminine is not only a giver and protector of life but… she is the goddess of life and death at once.” (Pg. 45)

He clarifies, “The archetypal image of the Great Mother lives in the individual as in the group, in the man as well as the woman. When therefore we say that the matriarchal world precedes the patriarchal world, we are not referring to a sequence of sociological structures, such as that set up by Bachofen [Mother Right].” (Pg. 91)

He states, “The Great Mother fills the universe and the earth with fertility and abundance, and tends to be characterized by a naturalistic, ‘sensuous’ form, while her aspect as ruler over the spirits and the dead favors forms stressing the unnatural, unreal, and ‘spiritual.’” (Pg. 108) Later, he adds, “Body-vessel and mother-child situation---the positive elementary character of the Feminine---spring from the most intimate personal experience, from an experience that is eternally human; and even when it is projected into the ends of heaven and earth, it preserves its closeness to the central personal phenomenon of feminine life.” (Pg. 147) But has also adds, “Blood sacrifice and dismemberment belong to the fertility ritual of the Great Mother. Both fecundate the womb of the earth…” (Pg. 189)

He observes, “It was [Robert] Briffault [Marriage-Past and Present, The Mothers] who discovered the fact (which is still insufficiently recognized) that early culture is in very high degree the product of the female group, and that the relative sedentariness of the matriarchal community of mothers and children was bound to provide a biological, psychological, and sociological force for the ‘ennoblement’ of the original natural state.” (Pg. 281)
He asserts, “The goddess is therefore not only the queen of the ennobled fruit of the soil but also of the spirit matter of transformation that is embodied in the wine. Thus the transformative character of the Feminine rises from the natural to the spiritual plane. The culture-bringing primordial mysteries culminate in a spiritual reality that completes the mystery character of the Feminine.” (Pg. 287)

He concludes, “The Archetypal Feminine in man unfolds like mankind itself. At the beginning stands the primeval goddess, knowing nothing but the secret of her womb; at the end is Tara, in her left hand the opening lotus blossom of psychic flowering, her right hand held out toward the world in a gesture of giving.” (Pg. 334) He continues, “The Great Goddess… the archetypal unity and multiplicity of the feminine nature---is the incarnation of the Feminine Self that unfolds in the history of mankind as in the history of every individual woman; its reality determines the individual as well as collective life. This archetypal psychical world which is encompassed in the multiple forms of the Great Goddess is the underlying power that even today… determine the psychic history of modern man and of modern woman.” (Pg. 336)

Bob is able to convey pointed insights in way that makes them feel as though you already know the information. I found myself saying "of course that's just common sense" several times. But on reflection realized the ideas were new. They had just been stated in a way that made them seem like day to day wisdom. Nicely done.

This is an excellent book. A wealth of knowledge about the hormone testosterone in its various formulations. It goes into great detail about each body organ system and its reactions to low and high levels of testosterone. Anyone prescribing testosterone to patients today would do well to read this superb endocrinology textbook.

As a practitioner I personally put this into use immediately on the first day after I started reading. After reading this book and attending different lectures on the subject I know that I have more current and pertinent information about testosterone than most others, other than perhaps practicing experienced endocrinologists.

I highly recommend this text !!!!!!

In essence this is an expose of the absurdity of war, and a moving plea for peace. As such, it takes its rank with far milder books, such as ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT―NEWSDAY

He is graphic, at times brilliantly so, but never brutal or bitter. He is, too, a first-rate storyteller―WASHINGTON POST

About the Author
Born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark, Sven Hassel joined the merchant navy at the age of 14. He did his compulsory year's military service in the Danish forces in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, joined the German army. He served throughout the Second World War on all fronts except North Africa. When the war ended in 1945 he was transferred between Russian, American and French prison camps, and upon returning to Denmark, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for treason. He began writing LEGION OF THE DAMNED during his time as a prisoner of war. His 14 Second World War books, which draw on his own encounters and experiences as a soldier, have sold over 53 million copies worldwide and have been published in more than 50 countries. He peacefully passed away in Barcelona in 2012, where he had resided since 1964.

The book that began the series

I have read many of Sven Hassels works and have found them ALL to be chillingly descriptive and accurate about the real frontline conditions faced by the German Military. These books also reveal the harsh and deadly occurances within the military heirarchy during ww2. I you desire a descriptive and action filled perspective on ww2, I recommend you read this book.

Picaresque adventures in WW2

Much malignity has been thrown at Hassel's books.

I'd like to point out that ONLY 'Legion of the Damned' is autobiographical.

The rest of the books are works of fiction...even if interspersed with many real anedoctes Hassel/Pedresen picked up during his prison-camp years.

All the 'errors' you can find in the books (wrong years for certain tanks/equipments, the fact that THERE WERE NOT 'PANZER' PENAL UNITS...etc) are DELIBERATE.

They make the story better and wilder...and btw Hassel was disgusted and angry at the Nazi war machine that abused him so bad so he 'retorted' my muddling the details that were oh-so-important to the sadistical officers and cowardly nazi 'pheasants'.

I have ALL Hassel's books except for the one regarding Finland and I always approached them the way you read picaresque adventures...you know thy're far-fetched and credibility-stretching butyou enjoy them for the vivid carachters' depiction

and the cruel humour...not to have sound historical facts from them.

This book and others by Sven Hassel are true gems that take the reader to a place and time that is horrifying. You feel the fear,and understand the terrors of war as if it is really happening. These books are a true window into the world of the WW2 Russian front at its worst. A definate must read for all war novel enthusiasts who enjoy reading what it was truely like on the Russian front. Non stop action from page 1 through to the end. These books are my all time favorites and I'm sure they will become one of your favorites as well.
